Paraorchestra & Friends

Accessibility focused website for ground-breaking ensemble

The British Paraorchestra are the world’s only large-scale ensemble for disabled musicians. Our aim was to create a platform to showcase the breadth of captivating music projects and experiences, whilst meeting a range of accessibility needs.

The British Paraorchestra are the world’s only large-scale ensemble for disabled musicians. This boundary-breaking group sets a new template for music-making, either on its own or in partnership with its two partner ensembles, Army of Generals, and, Charles Hazlewood’s All Star Collective. Together, Paraorchestra and Friends produce ambitious and captivating large-scale contemporary music projects and experiences.

Our mission was to create a website that is engaging, vibrant, inclusive and showed off the breath of their programme. One of the biggest hurdles was to ensure the website met a range of accessibility needs within the design, to negate having to have too many options. These included; colour contrast, avoiding hover menus and avoiding pop-ups/overlays.

Given the restrictions, we wanted to push the design further by adding subtle animations such as the rotating logo that sits within the navigation menu and the newsletter sign up icon at the foot of the homepage. We also explored different ways that we could animate content in on scroll/load that wouldn’t be invasive for an accessibility needs user.
