Creative England

‘One Thing I Know’ book and website

One Thing I Know is a collection of articles written by over forty South West creative leaders, from the more established to niche start-ups, in order to share the knowledge gained from running a creative business with the next generation of creative entrepreneurs.

Creative England interviewed over 50 creative leaders from across the South West about their experiences running a successful company. Our challenge was to take those articles and translate them into a visually engaging book and website which could be used as a resource by budding entrepreneurs.

We were initially part of a small group of design agencies shortlisted to pitch to work on this exciting new book and web project from Creative England. Following a successful presentation we were selected to carry out the work based on the strength of our design concepts and ideas for the project as a whole.

Our concept for the book was simple. We brought together some of the best illustrators, designers, visual artists and photographers in the region and asked them to produce illustrations based on extracts from the editorial. We sent up guidlines within the brief including a limited colour palette in order to keep a consistency and coherence running throughout the book.

We were lucky enough to work with some fantastic local and national talents including Taxi Studio, Melbs, Ginger Monkey and Slumber Bean to create over 30 unique illustrations to accompany the editorial content. The end result is a limited edition 116-page book which is both a helpful resource and full of visually rich imagery.

We also built an online platform to help support the book which will act as an digital resource for all the articles and imagery. Over time the site will develop and grow as more words of wisdom are added. The website was built over a WordPress content management system and is designed to be fully-responsive.

  • The website needed to act as an online resource for both articles and illustrations. We wanted to create an Home page which was easy to navigate and contained 'Featured Articles'

  • We wanted to keep a coherence between the printed publication and digital platform and so introduced design elements from the book into the site. We also included a filtering system so users could search for articles in designated categories.

  • Article pages were kept simple using a single text column to allow for good readability. We also included options within the CMS to easily select pull quotes from the text.
