Situations is an award-winning visual arts organisation who commission and produce ambitious and inspiring projects by contemporary artists for a range of different sites and situations. Situations aim to produce a programme of commissions which challenge conventional definitions of public art, which develop both the art form and the artist’s practice and create exceptional opportunities for people to engage with the work of contemporary artists in unexpected places.
Situations commissioned us to redesign their logotype and design and build a website that better reflects the dynamism and stories of their projects and feels more alive with new content.
Our aim with the logotype was to create a more contemporary mark which was less “elegant and quiet” and more bold and confident. We decided upon using the font Knockout as we felt it had the right structural look – . We tweaked a number of the characters and the kerning to achieve a bespoke design. We included the horizontal line as we felt it was important to retain the legacy of the brand.
Having created the new logotype, we set about creating a new online experience which would help Situations to exhibit the wide and diverse range of projects and programmes they are involved in both locally and abroad. The overall design was kept light to give the projects and programs full focus. We used a colour palette of blues and green hues influenced by different landscapes and an adapted version of DIN 1451 as a display typeface to compliment the logotype.
Importantly, the site was created over a WordPress core to allow for easy management of content by the team at Situations. We also built a new eCommerce platform into the site and built the whole site over a Twitter Bootstrap framework for a fully responsive web design.
