Devices, gadgets and computers are a fundamental part of our everyday lives, yet most people know so little about what these things are made of; let alone how to fix them or create new ways to use them. However, an exciting shift is emerging in society, a shift where people are finding new and inventive ways to re-skill. Whether it be learning how to sew, garden, build furniture or bake bread – the desire to produce, invent, make and fix things is re-emerging. There are also skills we have never actually learnt about, which are key to understanding many of the modern technologies we take for granted.
Technology Will Save Us (TWSU) is a DIY technology start-up based in East London. They create fun and engaging kits that are designed around everyday life themes such as gardening, music, gaming, play and energy. Their kits are intended to bring their customers closer to technology through making and doing.
TWSU decided that they needed to create a new website that better reflected the products and workshops that they sell. The new website needed to be a place of inspiration and making, a place to showcase how their kits fit into everyday life and help different people to learn about technology whilst making fun and useful things.
We designed and built the new site over a WordPress core, with a fully integrated eCommerce platform (using the WooCommerce plugin) and a community area (using a combination of BuddyPress and Barley Editor plugins) where users can register, login and upload their own posts to the site. The site is also aimed at customers on the move and is optimised for use on all major tablet and mobile devices.
