Tobacco Factory

New look website for iconic Bristol creative hub

We worked closely with Tobacco Factory to create a website design influenced by the buildings industrial heritage.

Tobacco Factory is a multi-purpose building that houses a lively Cafe Bar and restaurant, as well as meeting spaces; a gym; the offices of several creative organisations; a performing art school; and residential apartments. The building is also home to Tobacco Factory Theatres – one of the most exciting performance venues in the country.

Tobacco Factory approached us to not only redesign their existing website, but to give their brand identity a lick of paint as well. We chose to retain the red from the existing brand colour palette to show the strength and importance of the building, whilst adding additional colours, such as blue and white, to the colour palette. Our two column design and bold typography is a reference to the industrial heritage of the building itself.

The three fundamental problems with the previous website was a duplication of content, unclear user journey and events being buried deep in the website. Therefore, it was important for us to take advantage of space on the homepage to ensure a variety of information was shown; a brief summary of who they are, key upcoming events and a flexible area so they could promote any additional information/news from the website. We also built them a calendar (‘What’s On‘) to clearly promote the different art, music and talk events, as well as the weekly Sunday Market.

Given the historical importance of the building to the local community, it also felt important to include a dated timeline, as a celebration of its rich history.
